Strunk & White: Rewrite 2

First Edit

Water is a liquid that is composed of oxygen and hydrogen. It covers about three-fourths of the surface of the earth, and it takes the form of ice, snow, and vapor.

The air is constantly taking up water from rivers, lakes, oceans, and damp ground. Cool air contains moisture, but heated air contains more moisture. Heated air becomes lighter, so it rises and becomes cool. The moisture is condensed into fine particles that form clouds, which float across the sky. The little particles unite and form raindrops that sprinkle the dry fields. At night, the grass and flowers become cool; warm air touches them and it is chilled. It loses part of its moisture and drops of dew are formed.

Water has many uses. People and plants drink it. It cleanses our bodies, our clothes, the leaves, and the flowers. In addition, water is a great worker. It floats vessels and turns the wheels of mills. It is converted into steam that can be harnessed to work mighty engines that do the work of thousands of people and horses.
